Happy Grandparents Day!

Being a grandparent means you can be as silly you want to be.

Grandparents. Everybody's got 'em, but I think they are not as appreciated as they should be.

I was blessed to meet all four of my grandparents, but I didn't know my mother's parents well. They lived three states away from us, so visits were rare.

My paternal grandparents lived much closer to us and we saw them about once a month. They were farmers and it was always fun visiting the farm, feeding the baby lambs, climbing trees, and exploring their rambling old house. They were both from solid German stock and weren't demonstrative people. I don't remember either ever telling me they loved me or even hugging me, but I knew they loved me. They showed it by wanting to spend time with me, by taking an interest in my activities.

It wasn't until I was in college that I really started to appreciate them. By then, though, I was too busy with my life to spend too much time with them. I always thought that there would be time "later". Of course, that wasn't true and I regret missing out on that time with them.

In God's infinite wisdom, he has enabled me to spend time with many wise and interesting people through the years and so I've been able to gain some of the knowledge that my grandparents would have imparted to me (if I'd just asked!). I'm thankful for those opportunities!

If your grandparents are still around, make a point of spending some time with them. Ask them about their life. They will appreciate it and so will you!
